The University of Montevallo, is a four-year public university located in Montevallo, which is a city in Shelby County, in the US state of Alabama, with a population estimated at a number of nearly 5000 inhabitants, during the 2000 census, covering a total area of 7.7 square miles, most of it being land, only 0.1 square miles being covered by water.
The university was founded in 1896, and it is Alabama’s only public liberal arts college. The institution adopted its current name on September 1, 1969, first starting as the Alabama Girls’ Industrial School (AGIS), a women-only technical school that also offered high school-level courses. AGIS became the Alabama Girls’ Technical Institute in 1911, in 1919, ‘’and College for Women’’ being added to its name, in 1923 being given its former name, before adopting its current one, which was Alabama College, State College for Women.
The university offers various educational programs through several colleges which include: the Michael E. Stephens College of Business, College of Education, College of Arts and Sciences, and College of Fine Arts, and it has a total enrollment of approximately 3000 students, of which more than 2500 are undergraduates and 428 are postgraduates.
Its athletic teams are known as the Falcons, who compete in 10 NCAA Division II sports, for men’s and women’s, including basketball, baseball, golf, soccer, cross-country, volleyball and tennis. The Falcons have experienced notable achievements in many of their sports, in the past years, including in men’s basketball, in which they are 2006 NCAA South Region Champions, 2006 NCAA Elite Eight Quarterfinalists, 2007 NCAA South Region Champions, men’s baseball, in which they are 2006 NCAA South Central Region Champions and 2006 NCAA National Semifinalist, and in men’s soccer, in which they are 2007 NCAA South Region Champions and appeared in the 2007 Final Four, among other achievements.
Among the most resonant names on the list of notable alumni, there are: Jo Kittinger – Children’s book author, speaker, and President of SCBWI, Rebecca Luker - American musical theatre actress and soprano who has appeared in several prominent Broadway productions, Louise Fletcher - noted film actress, and Polly Holliday - American actress best known for the character of Flo from the hit television show Alice, among others.
